'Castle' already has some mystery-novelist cred in hand, having featured authors James Patterson and Stephen J. Cannell as Castle's poker buddies in the pilot. The network isn't revealing the true identity of the 'Heat Wave' writer. Repeats of 'Castle' will air on Saturday nights in July starting this week. Castle's circle of poker buddies includes veteran TV writer-producer Stephen J. Cannell and author James Patterson playing themselves. Castle (2009-2016) is an American comedy-drama television series, airing on ABC, about a mystery writer, Richard Castle, becoming involved in investigating murders after a copycat killer uses his novels as inspiration and he decides to base a series of novels on the lead investigator, Detective Kate Beckett.
Michael Connelly is a real-life murder mystery writer who appears in Castle playing himself as one of Richard Castle'spoker buddies. Episodes he has appeared in are Deep in Death, A Deadly Game, and Hollander's Woods.
He has said he loves the show because 'It's a fantasy version of what I do!'[1]
Biography[edit]
Best known for his series of crime novels based on the exploits of fictional Los Angeles Police Department Detective Hieronymus Bosch, Michael Connelly became enthused about writing when he discovered the work of Raymond Chandler in college. He spent many years as a newspaper reporter in Florida, with crime as his beat, after college and was once nominated for a Nobel Prize for Journalism. His first Bosch novel, The Black Echo, was published in 1992 and was honored by the Mystery Writers of America with an Edgar Award for Best First Novel.
He is married and lives in Florida.

Richard Castle Poker Buddies
Connelly's works have garnered him multiple awards for murder mystery writing. He has also written numerous short stories, produced a music CD (Dark Sacred Night: The Music of Harry Bosch) which features the music mentioned in his Bosch series, and appeared in a DVD (Blue Neon Night: Michael Connelly's Los Angeles) where he shows viewers the locations used in his books. In addition to The Lincoln Lawyer, Blood Work was also made into a movie with Clint Eastwood directing and starring. Lastly, he created and executive produced a science fiction series for television called Level 9 that ran briefly on the UPN network.

Well-known television writer, producer, and director Stephen J. Cannell appears in Castle as himself in the pilot episode Flowers for Your Grave, in the season 2 premiere Deep in Death, and the season 2 finale A Deadly Game. He joins fellow writers James Patterson and Michael Connelly as poker buddies of Richard Castle. He also appears on the season 1 DVD of Castle in a vignette where Nathan Fillion joins him in a write along and Cannell attempts to give Nathan a taste of what it's really like to be a murder mystery writer.

- Died September 30, 2010 in Pasadena, California from complications of melnoma [1]
- Married his high school sweetheart.[1]
- Had 4 children, two boys and two girls. His oldest child died at age 15 when a sand castle he was building collapsed on him, suffocating him.[1]
After he died, a tribute to him followed the end credits of Punked. The long-running videographic logo of his production company ran, where Cannell is shown sitting at a typewriter, pulls a piece of paper from the typewriter and tosses it over his shoulder. Normally in the video, the image of Cannell at the typewriter would fade, except for the piece of paper which would float in the air and morph into the official logo of Cannell's production company. However, in the tribute, the words 'Colleague, Mentor, Friend' were added to the video and the piece of paper, floated past the words 'We'll Miss You, Pal.'
The show also honored Cannell in The Dead Pool (episode 3.21). Richard Castle invites his protege, Alex Conrad, to join him, Dennis Lehane, and Michael Connelly for a poker game and when Alex unknowingly goes to sit in the seat Cannell typically occupied, they stop him and explain that they have a tradition whereby when one of the group dies, they leave the seat vacant for a year.

- Rob Bowman considered Cannell a mentor, since he gave him his first job in television working on The A-Team.
- Suffered from undiagnosed dylexsia in his youth and as an adult remained active on the issue, advocating for adults and children with disabilities.[1]
- The character of Jim Rockford was created for a series called Toma he was producing. ABC rejected the idea, and eventually the script was re-written and became the pilot episode of The Rockford Files.[1]
- Won a Prime-Time Emmy in 1978 for The Rockford Files and was nominated 4 other times.
